所収。印象に残った文章: 主人公(インド生まれ、1964年に英国留学、そして米国へ)の最後の言葉。

あの宇宙飛行士は、永遠のヒーローになったとはいえ、月にいたのはたった二時間かそこらだ。私はこの新世界にかれこれ三十年は住んでいる。なるほど結果からいえば私は普通のことをしたまでだ。国を出て将来を求めたのは私ばかりではないのだし、もちろん私が最初ではない。それでも、これだけの距離を旅して、これだけ何度も食事をして、これだけの人を知って、これだけの部屋に寝泊まりしたという、その一歩ずつの行程に、自分でも首をひねりたくなることがある。どれだけ普通に見えようと、私自身の想像を絶すると思うことがある。

While the astronauts, heroes forever, spent more hours on the moon, I have remained in this new world for nearly thirty years. I know my achievement is quite ordinary.
