Giants to add another Alou

If Bonds continues to hit fourth in the lineup, as Felipe Alou recently indicated, Moises Alou would bat third or fifth. Either way, it should represent an upgrade for the Giants, who had nobody besides Bonds with more than 22 homers or 90 RBIs last season. That was a factor in Bonds' major-league-record 232 walks, 120 of which were intentional.

Felipe Alou, who managed Moises in Montreal in 1992-96, insisted that his son could handle a fresh responsibility. "Mo is a born right fielder," the elder Alou declared at the winter meetings, pointing out that his son played left field to complement teammates who were more established right fielders, such as Larry Walker in Montreal, Gary Sheffield in Florida and Sammy Sosa in Chicago.

Alou will be the fourth free agent to sign with the Giants this off-season, joining shortstop Omar Vizquel (three years, $12.25 million), relief ace Armando Benitez (three years, $21.5 million) and catcher Mike Matheny (three years, $10.5 million).

の4人でだいたい完了。外野3人が皆高齢で守備に若干の不安は残るが、プレイオフ進出が期待できる陣容になったと言えよう。あとは開幕までにじっくりとブルペンの整備をしていけばいい。
