Alfredo Simon, RHP
Simon is a little bit older than when the Phillies signed him, and we're not just talking the normal passage of time. Simon gained 21 months on the age (as well as the revelation that the name he was signed under -- Carlos Cabrera -- wasn't his real name) when he had visa problems. Nevertheless, he's a 6-4, 215 pound monster with a fastball that still has plenty of upside.
The heater sits in the low-to-mid 90s, and there are some who think he'll be able to run it up to 98 by the time he's done developing. The 23-year-old Dominican also throws a changeup and slider, but hadn't completely been able to master his command of either. His walk rate, however, was vastly improved this season, while starting in the pitching-friendly Florida State League. Simon was eighth in the FSL with a 3.27 ERA and had allowed 38 walks while striking out 107 in 134.2 IP. Perhaps more importantly, he's been getting stronger as the season has gone on, posting successively lower ERAs each month of the season, includling a 1.72 mark over five July starts.

DePodesta said the trade with Florida involved some cash considerations, but nothing major, meaning each team will more or less pick up the full amount of salary owed to each of the players it is receiving. That means the trade represents a net savings of about $4.5 million for the Dodgers. Encarnacion was in the first season of a two-year contract the Dodgers gave him after acquiring him from the Marlins last Dec. 13 for minor leaguer Travis Ezy, and had a salary this season of $3.565 million. Mota's salary is $1.475 million, and he stood to receive a considerable raise in arbitration.
Penny has a 2004 salary of $3.725 million and also was in line to get about $8 million next season through arbitration, making the swap of Lo Duca and Penny a veritable wash financially. Choi is making $310,000, and Murphy, who played college ball at California State University, Northridge, is not on a major-league contract.
