金曜から日曜までの対ボストン3連戦。1勝1敗で何とか一息つく。しかし、1戦目、2戦目ともに、ジャイアンツの守備、特にボンズの守備の乱れが目立った。1戦目は7-2という大きなリードをしたものの、守備の乱れが原因で逆転負け。2戦目も、4-0のリードを守りきれず同点に追いつかれた(Alfonzoのホームランで勝つことは勝ったが)。
もともとボンズはおそろしく守備のいい選手だ。しかし年齢による衰えが、確実に守備に来ている。バッティングの円熟・完成と守備の衰えが同時にやってきている39歳(7月で40歳)なので、

「ボンズのS.F.との契約が切れたあと(2006年または2007年)アリーグに移ってDH専任になれば、さらにあと何年もできるのではないか」という話がいつも出てくる。ちなみにボンズの契約は、2002年から2006年までの5年間$90milの契約だが、5年目の2006年の条項には、出場試合数と報酬がリンクするようになっている。よって、2005年オフに(そのとき41歳)DHを選択してアリーグに移る可能性は十分にある。その場合は、まぁ、ボストンかニューヨークが手を上げるのだろうが、ボンズはボストンについてこんな問題発言をしている。

Bonds admitted in the Boston Globe article he has no firsthand experience, but said he has heard enough stories to form an opinion. ボストンという街にそういう雰囲気があるのは否めない。しかしボンズが慣れ親しんだサンフランシスコ・ベイエリアが、逆に全米の中でも例外的な素晴らしい場所なのだ、ということもできると思う。
あと、増える一方のボンズ敬遠。敬遠に反対するときに皆が振り回すためのラバー・チキン(10ドル)が、ついに売り出される。すぐに買いに行かねば。

「The San Francisco Giants are tired of all the walks Barry Bonds is drawing this season. The club will begin selling orange rubber chickens named "Walk'er" on Monday, when the Giants open a four-game series against division rival Los Angeles. The chickens -- described as "your average fowl" -- will sell for $10, with proceeds going to the Giants Community Fund. Their purpose? "To officially protest the number of intentional walks at SBC Park," the Giants said. Entering Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox, Bonds had drawn a major league-leading 94 walks in 57 games, 51 intentional. 」
SBCパークのライトスタンドの煉瓦塀には、今シーズンのボンズ敬遠の数だけ、ラバー・チキンが吊るされるようになっている。敬遠のたびに一つずつラバー・チキンが増えていく。
