A decade: 10年が引き起こす変化について

The common wisdom is that people always over predict how things will change in the course of a single year, but under predict how much they'll change in the course of a decade. If that's true, why not look back a decade and see just how much things have changed?

つまり次のDecadeで何が起きるかについては、「とてつもない大変化が起こるのが当たり前だから、その引き金は何か。そしてその引き金からどういうプロセスでどんな大変化が引き起こされるのか。それらをイメージし、そのイメージの中で現在起きている一つ一つの事象の意味を位置付けながら考える」視点で、常に強い緊張感を持って世界を見つめ続けていかなければならないのである。

こんなことを書いたが「a decade」をバカにしてはいけないのだ。Techdirtが話題にしているのはNew Yorkerの記事で、その記事はウェブ上で無償アクセスできないから、その記事について書かれたBlogにリンクが張ってある。

これはNew Yorker記事の一部だが、あるアメリカの中学校の課題は、過去の中からある1年を選び、一週間、あたかもその年に生きているかのように生活すること。TechDirtがこう言うように、

1992 doesn't seem that long ago, does it? However, there were no DVDs, TiVos or iPods. Most people weren't online -- and if you were actually using "the World Wide Web" you were one of a very tiny group of people. Certainly, most of the info you see today wasn't available. Mobile phones were around, but weren't quite as mobile, and certainly weren't as popular.

たった13年前の1992年であっても、携帯もインターネットもない暮らしである。
1992年は、僕が初めてアメリカに住んだ年なので、その年の生活というのは鮮やかに記憶している。パソコンは、40万円以上出して割賦で買ったMacのSE30を持ってきていた。ハイパーカードを「知的生産の道具」として使っていた。オンライン環境を試してみようとCompuserveに登録したが、本当に遅かったし、よく落ちたし、大切な情報もなかったので、ほとんど何もできなかった記憶がある。
電子メールはもちろん使っていなかった。東京とのやり取りはすべてFaxと電話だった。

In conclusion, 1992 was clearly a very confusing, difficult time in which to live in the United States of America….

New Yorker記事はこうまとめるけれど、当時はそれが当たり前だったから、別に不便は何も感じなかった。13年後の2018年には、2005年を振り返って、この記事の結論と同じような感想を持つに違いないのである。
