が監督評価の考え方について書いていて面白い。
まず監督評価は、Pre-game decisionsとIn-game decisionsの二つに分類できる。
「Pre-game decisions, such as roster and rotation, who plays where, batting order. The manager can also affect the mood and atmosphere in the clubhouse. I think that these are the most important aspects of a manager's job.
In-game decisions, such as relieving pitchers, bunts, steals, pitchouts, pinch hitting, intentional walks. These are the most visible decisions that a manager makes.
There's a difference between the two. Pre-game decisions can be discussed and shared. General Managers often make key roster decisions. And rotations or fielding positions may already be set, based upon the makeup of the team. But the responsibility for in-game decisions falls directly to the manager. So even though in-game decisions may have less impact than pre-game ones, we tend to judge a manager on what he did during a game.」
Pre-game decisionsとは、ベンチ入りメンバー選定、ローテーション、打順など。そしてチームの雰囲気作り。In-game decisionsは、リリーフピッチャー、バント、盗塁、ピッチドアウト、代打、敬遠などのゲーム中の意思決定。前者はGMと監督の共同責任。後者は監督の単独責任。
そして、アリーグとナリーグの監督ごとの、ゲーム中の采配の動きの激しさが一覧表になっている。要素は、チームごとの、盗塁チャレンジと犠牲バントと敬遠の総数だ。
各チームの平均値だけで言えば、アリーグは平均52試合で、盗塁チャレンジが45で、犠牲バントと敬遠が13。ナリーグは同じく平均52試合で、盗塁チャレンジが37で、犠牲バントが25、敬遠が20。
「It's been said before, but managers of losing teams tend to try more things, hoping to find some hidden spark, while managers of contending teams are more apt to sit back and let their teams do the work. Also, it seems to me that younger managers may want to insert themselves into the game a bit more than the seasoned managers.」
負けているチームの監督ほどよく動き、若い監督ほどよく動く、というコメントだが、それ以上のことがこの二つの表から読み取れて、たいへん面白い。たとえばRebuilding中のチームは、目先の勝敗よりも長期的経験を重視するから敬遠は少ないとか。
また、チームによって敬遠が著しく多いところがあるわけだが、これがチームの投手力(特に先発とブルペン力)とどう関係あるかについての研究が続けて別のエントリーで書かれた。

一般に、先発投手はあまり敬遠をせず、リリーフピッチャーのほうが多く敬遠する。よってブルペンが弱いチームの敬遠数が多くなることが統計的に示されている。
また最初のエントリーの読者からの「盗塁チャレンジと犠牲バントと敬遠という三要素に加えて、投手交代という要素も加えたらどうか」という指摘に答えて、その四要素で両リーグの全チームを比較した表も掲げられた。
「Wow. Felipe Alou has gone to his bullpen an awful lot. The Giants' bullpen has the second-worst ERA among all National League teams, too.」
なるほどジャイアンツは他に突出して投手交代が多く、その原因がブルペンの不調にあることがはっきりとわかる。
これらの表を眺めていると時がたつのを忘れてしまう。

6月6日現在の「今年のメジャーリーグ」評価

がUSA Todayで発表されている。
チームランキング(アリーグ、ナリーグ混在)は、ニューヨーク、ボストン、アナハイム、フロリダ、セントルイス、ヒューストンの順。やはり今年は、ワールドシリーズよりもALCSのほうが面白いだろう。
ナリーグ西は、LAが12位、サンディエゴが14位、サンフランシスコが17位とどんぐりの背比べ。
個人では、アリーグは、MVPがゲレロ。ピッチャーは、ケビン・ブラウンとカート・シリングの激戦。ナリーグは、MVPがボンズ。ピッチャーはロジャー・クレメンス。ゲレロを除けば、皆、大ベテランばかりである。
新人は、アリーグはオークランドのクロスビー。ナリーグは二位と三位に、松井稼と大塚が入っている。
