Microsoft in recent weeks approached Facebook with proposals to invest in the startup that could value the fast-growing site at $10 billion or higher, said people familiar with the matter. If those talks bear fruit, Microsoft could purchase a stake of up to 5% in the closely held startup, at a cost in the range of $300 million to $500 million, the people said.

Well the way that we think about it is that people have all these real connections in the world and we’re kind of mapping them out. We’re trying to figure out what are the connections that people have? For any given person who are the hundred people who they know? Who are the two hundred people that they have contact with? Who are the people that they care about the most?
Once people share that information we can give them a set of services that use that information.

Our whole theory is that people have real connections in the world. People communicate most naturally and effectively with their friends and the people around them. What we figured is that if we could model what those connections were, [we could] provide that information to a set of applications through which people want to share information, photos or videos or events. But that only works if those relationships are real. That's a really big difference between Facebook and a lot of other sites. We're not thinking about ourselves as a community — we're not trying to build a community — we're not trying to make new connections.
(TIME)

"A lot of companies get grouped as social networking," says Zuckerberg. "Lots are dating sites, or media sites or sites for community. But our mission is helping people understand the world around them."
(FORTUNE)

We don’t view the site as an online community—we bill it as a directory that is reinforcing a physical community. What exists on the site is a mirror image of what exists in real life.
(NEWSWEEK)

Zuckerberg didn't care about using the Internet to make new friends. "People already have their friends, acquaintances, and business connections," he explains. "So rather than building new connections, what we are doing is just mapping them out."

(We don’t view the site as an online community)、リアルでの人間関係をそのままマッピングした鏡像(people have all these real connections in the world and we’re kind of mapping them out/a mirror image of what exists in real life)で、新しいコネクションをネット上で作ろうとはしていない(Zuckerberg didn't care about using the Internet to make new friends)ということだ。
だからミッションは、人々にその周囲(リアル世界での人間関係)で起きていることの理解を助けること(our mission is helping people understand the world around them)。
(That's a really big difference between Facebook and a lot of other sites)と言う。

"Right now, social networks are closed platforms," Zuckerberg told the assembled entrepreneurs. "Today we are going to end that."

Metaphorically, Mr Zuckerberg views himself as similar to the pioneering Renaissance mapmakers who amassed and combined snippets of information and then charted new lands and seas so that other people could use their maps to find, say, new trade routes. In Mr Zuckerberg's case, the map charts human relationships. Whereas many of the other social networks on the web primarily help people to make new contacts online—whether for hanky panky, marriage or business—Mr Zuckerberg is exclusively interested in “mapping out” the “real and pre-existing connections” among people, he says.
